I have a bilateral port wine stain on my face and lower body, extending to both legs, and I’ve undergone more than 16 laser treatments over the years. Like many who have this birthmark type, some areas of mine may never fully fade. Yet, I’m a strong advocate for treatment , and regular screenings due to the medical and life-altering risks associated with this genetic mutation. I welcome stories from others with birthmarks and visibly unique skin – to me, it’s a reminder that Mother Nature is wild and we should celebrate our differences, showing that beauty can and always transcends conventional norms.

Birthmark or beauty mark? My port wine stain is a bilateral facial lesion. I also have it on the entirety of the back of my legs from my bum to the soles of my feet. This birthmark also covers parts of my internal organs, eyes, ears, and throat.

This is a “bleb” . With Port Wine Stains blebs can develop more and more as you age.

During my first pregnancy I developed on on my chin that ruptured and would not stop bleeding without being cauterized

When it healed it caused a large hypotrophic scar 😐

Blebs are difficult to deal with because of the shear amount of blood vessels behind them. When hit with lasers they rarely dissipate and can widen . These are my beauty marks 😉. No makeup Monday’s has turned into an everyday.

On the one hand it’s great. But makeup is a two sided sword for me. I love it and I hate it. I love makeup in the way every girl does... it’s fun and a form of self expression. I hate it because applying it, as fun is one thing but for work feels like a chore. When I have makeup on I feel freedom but it is a freedom that leaves me with mixed emotions, sadness and resentment.

I wonder if all of you love make up the way I do. Something you truly enjoy but leaves you with a little dark corner in your mind that reminds you that with out it on, the world meets your birthmark first and you second.

Makeup does not shield me, and my birthmark does not define me.

These are pictures of me after treatments at age 6, 7, 8, and 9 years old. I have also included childhood images so you can compare my PWS then and now. For me, I have mild Sturge Webber with a larger port wine stain on my face and legs. The pulse dye laser is more for maintenance for me and not for expecting or looking for my port wine to fully clear. The treatment keeps its growth at bay and helps stave of any complications to my eyesight and any of the other sensitive structures nearby. My Port Wine stain slowly grows and thickens if left unchecked. I would love to hear why or why not any of the #sturgeweber #portwinestain #birthmark community chooses to treat or not treat their own birthmarks.

It’s been 5 years since my last pulse due laser treatment. I have seen some tissue thickening on the left side of my face and som pore enlargement in that thickens tissue. This year I’m going to have a pulse dye treatment for maintenance. Hopefully they will go hard at the left side so I can get some relief in pressure.

November 21st 3014 day ten after pulse dye ... I am completely healed from the laser . There are two new blebs (mini granulomas). I don't really see a lightening or blanching of any of the treated areas.
